Congreso [del Paraguay] finalmente permite el ingreso de Venezuela al Mercosur

Today, on Wednesday December 18th, 2013, Mercosur has turned a corner that was preventing their normal operation. The Paraguayan Chamber of Representatives has finally put an end to a bitter process, one we have been telling our readers about since this blog came to life, in the second half of 2012. Controversy will not end with this decision, and it is well it does not. However, business will now face a scenario that has been freed from a dark cloud of juridical doubt. The key bodies of Mercosur -the Council, the Common Market Group and the Commerce Committe- will again be able to cast their votes knowing that if all five countries vote in favour, the respective decision, resolution or directive will become part of the body of laws that orient the actions of countries so diverse as Uruguay and Venezuela. And eventhough Venezuela shall not sit face to face with the EU, now the EU shall have less excuses to delay the negotiations that have dragged for so long. Mercosur will certainly remain as complex as ever, but as from today the rules they put their signature to, will be again the collective decisions of the block. This is not a minor question.

La Cámara de Diputados sancionó este miércoles el Protocolo de Adhesión de Venezuela al Mercosur. De esta forma, finalmente el Congreso da vía libre para el ingreso del país caribeño al bloque regional luego de varios años de oposición.

cosur durante una sesión extraordinaria realizada en la mañana de este miércoles. Con 48 votos a favor y uno en contra, la Cámara Baja aprobó el ingreso del país caribeño, que también ya contaba con la venia de los senadores.
El diputado colorado, José Maria Ibañez, presidente de la Comisión de Relaciones Exteriores, argumentó el dictamen a favor diciendo que el Paraguay está en un gran momento para captar inversiones y que el Mercosur permite alcanzar a 800 millones de consumidores.
"Podemos permanecer en el limbo, estar pero no estar. Hemos sido suspendidos de manera ilegal, injusta e ilegítimamente (...) La causa paraguaya ha ganado espacio y prestigio en todo el mundo. Hoy estamos en nuevo escenario, coyuntura y situación", afirmó. Dijo que en caso de no estar en el bloque, se dejaría de ser atractivo para la inversión.
